SU Scholar Series | Bryan Davis & Jon Udelson

Update March 16: we are rescheduling this event because of the campus closure and will update this listing as soon as possible with the new date.

Join us for these monthly, hour-long events featuring two inspiring faculty presentations. Each speaker will present for 15-20 minutes, followed by time for Q&A. Afterwards, stay for conversation and light refreshments.

Bryan Davis, PhD, Assistant Professor of Chemistry

Guided inquiry learning has been used in many disciplines to help improve students' recall, understanding, and application of concepts. Students in my biochemistry class are generally good at understanding and using a single new concept, but may struggle when analyzing a system where multiple factors are in play. So, I wrote a guided inquiry activity to help students in introductory biochemistry classes understand how multiple layers of regulation can interact to allow an organism to control an enzyme's activity in response to a wider variety of conditions than would be possible from only a single type of regulation. In my presentation, I'll provide information on guided inquiry learning and share examples from my activity to give participants a sense of how it can be used.

Jon Udelson, PhD, Associate Professor of English

Jon will describe the process of bringing his co-edited collection of essays, Seeking Our Places: Innovations in Creative Writing Studies Research, Methodologies, and Practices (2026) to publication. He will also talk about the exigence of the collection, the "why now?" that sparked the publisher's interest, situating the collection in the field of creative writing studies research. Faculty who are interested in pursuing publication may find the discussion of the ins and outs of getting an edited collection on the shelves especially helpful.

Now in its second year, the SU Scholar Series features short presentations by faculty on their sabbatical projects, recent publications, work completed as TTL Fellows, and other scholarly projects. SU Scholar Series is sponsored by SU Libraries and the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning.
